Pakistan International Airlines flight PK 8303, an Airbus A320, went down on Friday afternoon while attempting a second landing. The plane was flying from Lahore to Karachi with about 99 people on board when it crashed in a crowded neighbourhood due to an apparent engine failure during landing. Official reports say there were 2 survivors from the aircraft itself but 57 bodies were found in the wreckage.

Pakistan’s civil aviation authority mentioned that the flight carried 91 passengers and 7 crew members. A transmission of the pilot’s last communication with traffic control put up on the LiveATC website indicated that the pilot had failed to land and was attempting for the second time. “We are proceeding direct, sir, we have lost engine, ” a pilot said. Before the transmission ended, the pilot said “Sir-mayday, mayday, mayday, mayday Pakistan 8303”.

Thus far, the PIA spokesperson, Abdullah Khan said that the black box had been found and was to be handed over to the inquiry board. This crash was recorded as the worst air disaster in Pakistan since 2012, when a Bhoja Air passenger aircraft, crashed in Islamabad and claimed 127 lives.
