Neo’s Face as a Canvas

For 26 year old self-taught make-up artist Neo Makopo, make-up has always been a part of his life. “I have always been a makeup addict from a young age, I would always take my mom’s makeup and lipsticks and apply them. Even on my dolls,” he said. As a young boy, his mother never bought him toy cars, it was always dolls.  “I think my mom knew that I was gay because she was the one buying me all those dolls,” Makopo continued.

Although as a child he played with face powder and lipsticks, he admits that he had never imagined turning his passion into a profession. In 2016, Makopo graduated with a diploma in Hospitality Management at Motheo TVET College. He however never pursued a career in hospitality. “It took me a diploma to realise that I am actually more passionate about beauty than cooking,” he said.

The Ficksburg born creative admits that at that time, he was only doing make-up on himself based on YouTube tutorials. He always uploaded his pictures on social media and people started falling for his work. “I knew it was talent when I would just look at a make-up design and would be able to pull it off,” said Makopo.

His biggest achievements so far is being nominated for best creative artist award for Mzansi Arts and Media Awards (MAMA). Makopo’s biggest dream is becoming an international beauty consultant and Bonang Matheba’s personal make-up artist.

Although he has faced a few hurdles, he has never stopped doing what he loves. He admits that he was not always this good with this craft and a lot of practice was put in. “If it’s your passion then go for it. Practice a lot and do not ever give up,” Makopo concluded.
