Zimbabwean journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono was released on bail of 10 000 Zimbabwean dollars pending trial on charges of inciting public.
He was arrested on July 20th, then jailed for publishing a story that exposed corruption of funds meant for protective gear for the Zimbabwean healthcare workers. had recently published an expose in which he alleged corruption involving a $60 million purchase of protective equipment for health workers.
While speaking on conditions in Chikuribi prison, Chin’ono mentioned that majority of the prisoners are not given masks and soap and there is no social distancing because a cell meant to hold 16 people holds roughly 45 instead. One of the bail conditions of Chin’ono was for him to cease using his twitter account until his trial has ended. This was his fourth attempt at acquiring bail.
The journalist’s next court date is set for September 14th with no trial date in place yet.
